Stones, usually basalt river rocks, are placed into a device specifically designed for massage therapy and are heated with water to a temperature of about 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the stones have heated sufficiently, they are held by the massage therapist and are used to work the muscles. Hot stone massage penetrates deep into the muscles helping to relax the muscle fibers and relieve tension and pain.

It is, however, a good idea to consult your doctor regarding massage therapy if you suffer from any serious medical condition. Because of the application of heat, those suffering from sunburn should not receive hot stone massage.
